Alias Smith and Jones is a lighthearted western that was very much like the theatrical super film, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which I also loved. In the TV show, Pete Duel is Paul Newman; that is, Hannibal Heyes is the equivalent to Butch Cassidy. That makes Ben Murphy’s Jedediah ‘Kid’ Curry the milder version of Robert Redford’s Sundance Kid. The personalities are essentially the same, and

some of the action in the pilot is just like the movie. I don’t care because both are great for their genre.

The basic plot is that the two successful outlaws want to convince the governor to give them amnesty. To prove they can stay within the confines of the law, the governor agrees to the amnesty, but says the two must stay out of a trouble for a year ...

      • first. That’s the set up for the series.

James Drury guest stars as Lom Trevors, a one-time outlaw himself who is now a sheriff. He agrees to be the go between for Heyes and Curry and the governor. The role continues as a recurring one, but Drury only appears in this pilot.

What makes Alias Smith and Jones so successful is the chemistry between Duel and Murphy. They

are believable as Kansas cousins who turned to a life of crime when they had nothing else. They care about each other, but they’re human. They fight, but in the end, they are best friends.

In the pilot, there are some fine performances by guest stars Susan St. James, Forrest Tucker, and Earl Holliman. For me, Tucker is the standout. He’s just a hoot as Trevor’s deputy.
