  • It was a lovely lunch and I was really impressed by the quality of the food, because I could only remember eating burgers and hot dogs and candy when I had gone there as a youngster
  • I also liked that it had a lot more attractions than when I was kid but I was vastly disappointed to learn that Space Mountain, my ultimate favorite ride, was out of order because they were trying to fix something or make it better or something like that
  • But one of the best moments was when all four of us had our pictures taken with Mickey
  • I think it really sealed our trip as a triumph because here we were all together having a marvelous time with Mickey Mouse and for a while the shadow in my friend's eyes had lifted and she was a carefree little girl again

About four or five years ago, a very good friend of mine suffered a very deep tragedy. Her father had passed away suddenly and under strange circumstances and his death affected her to the core, leaving her entire family empty and in pain. But after a few months, she asked me and two other friends a favor. She said that she wanted to go to Disneyland because that was where her father had taken her when she was young almost every summer. It would be trip not only of nostalgia but of a rite of passage as this would be the first time she had ever gone to Disneyland without her father. It was a very bittersweet request and of course all of us agreed to go with her as companions. It had been literally years since I had gone to this enchanted playground and I was very excited to go and see it through my adult eyes. I was certain that I would still find it magical to a degree but now I could see it with realistic expectations

as well. Besides, I couldn’t say no to one of my best friends in her time of need, so I bundled up some cloths and toiletries and off we went in her specially manufactured van that had hand controls rather than the regular foot pedals as she was Muscular Dystrophy and was in a wheelchair.

The trip to California was both fought with fun and fights as we were all very close and tended to know which buttons to push for each other. In a way, it was a modern and adult version of Stand By Me with all of us being so different yet still a cohesive unit. We stayed a Motel 8 once getting into Anaheim and the next day we headed out to the Happiest Place on Earth. Once we got the tickets and were in, we made a beeline towards the attractions and rides. The one ride my friend insisted on going on was the Teacup Twirl. It was so much fun and I had such a good time whirling next to her in the plastic teacup!

We also went on the Pirates of the Caribbean boat ride. That was before the movie version and I just remember how life like the puppets were and was utterly fascinated by the various actions that was happening all around. But my favorite ride in the park had to be the Haunted Mansion. I had been on it when I was a very young child and it had scared the bejeezes out of me. But even so, I was still fascinated by the ride because I have always been a huge fan of the supernatural and I especially loved the haunted ballroom because it looked so real with the projections of old fashioned clothed dancers whirling around the dance floor. I always thought it was just lovely and wished that the ride would just stop there so I could see them more clearly.

And of course what Disneyland visit would it be if you didn’t hitch a ride on the It’s A Small World boat ride? I was again struck by how colorful and cute the figures were although after ...

the seventh round of the song it did get a bit annoying. But it’s part of the tradition and so it was worth going through it. As a kid I loved going on all the rides and never paid attention to the shops and restaurants, but now as an adult, although I did love going the rides still, I was also equally interested in the stores and diners. We had lunch at this marvelous little bistro with seating in the veranda. It was a lovely lunch and I was really impressed by the quality of the food, because I could only remember eating burgers and hot dogs and candy when I had gone there as a youngster. I also liked that it had a lot more attractions than when I was kid but I was vastly disappointed to learn that Space Mountain, my ultimate favorite ride, was out of order because they were trying to fix something or make it better or something like that. But all the other rides were just as good as I remember them as a
kid, but now I could also enjoy the extra nuances that I had missed by being so young. But one of the best moments was when all four of us had our pictures taken with Mickey. I think it really sealed our trip as a triumph because here we were all together having a marvelous time with Mickey Mouse and for a while the shadow in my friend’s eyes had lifted and she was a carefree little girl again.

In the end,I was very happy to have gone on this special trip with her and my other best friends. It was a blast and I honestly hope that one day soon we can repeat our trip. It seems that after that trip we were all going our separate ways all around the country so it got harder and harder to visit with each other although we still communicate by phone and email. But it’s just not the same of course. But at least I will have that wonderful memory of going to Disneyland with my best friends and having the time of my life.
