In the summertime, all makeup, except waterproof types, seems to rub off or just disappear in the heat. I have the most trouble with eye shadow; it just seems to end up in the crease of my eye and make me look tired and clownish. I went to the drugstore, determined to find something that would last, as well as look good.

I was drawn to the Almay section by a sign that advertised the brand’s new Pure Blends makeup, which was supposedly 98.2% natural, full of botanical ingredients, made without silicone or

chemicals, and last for 10 hours. Some of the ingredients listed were acai, orchid, papaya and lotus extracts, and the packaging is also said to be completely recyclable. I liked the display and the pretty pink packaging, and the completely natural ingredients sounded, in theory, like a great concept. Almay is traditionally a bit higher-priced than other drugstore brands, but these single eye shadows were only $7.99, which is not horribly expensive. The shades offered are right up my alley and seemed to almost have been made for me-they are the basic neutrals,

      • (browns, grays, greens) but in subtle variations, such as cinnamon, sage, apricot, petal and lavender. I chose sage, because I wanted to see if my green eyes would look greener, and decided that if they lasted all day and looked good, I might come back for some other colours.

I tried my eye shadow the very next day. It glided onto my eyes very smoothly, and the texture was light but soft. The colour looked almost sheer on, and I used a small brush to apply a very little bit under my lower lash

line. I really liked the effect-it made my eyes look greener. I was skeptical that it would last all day, though, mainly because of the almost sheer coverage, but it stayed on all day, without fading or creasing. I was impressed.

I used this eye shadow even in the heat, and it really stays put without putting on pressed powder first. Even when I use it under my eyes as a liner, it seems to resist fading. Almay Pure Blends Eye Shadow is an excellent product, and I will be buying more shades soon.
