Invisalign braces are a fairly new kind of orthodontic device. Made of a fine medical grade plastic they are completely clear and so far less noticeable than other orthodontic appliances.

One of the unique features about Invisalign is the clincheck. A patients orthodontist or dentist takes a mould of their mouth. Invisalign then create a computer simulation based on this mould and from it manufacture a series of aligners that patients wear for an average of two weeks each to move teeth. The clincheck shows every step of the process and allows the patient to see what their teeth will ultimately look like. It also allows the provider to make changes prior to manufacture if they are not happy with the final position of the teeth.

      One of the

major benefits of Invisalign is that they are not really noticeable at a social distance, although they are not completely invisible, rather they give the teeth a shiny appearance. However they are a substantial improvement aesthetically on any of the other orthodontic options available.

Another benefit is that they are completely removable; in fact they have to be removed for eating and drinking. For many adults this is what makes them an acceptable form of orthodontics, in that they can be removed for important events or occasions. It also means that patients are not restricted to eating or drinking certain foods, they can consume as normal provided they remove the braces first.

Invisalign need to be worn for 22 hours a day to work properly. This means that although they ...

      • are removable patient compliance is vital to success. Wearing them any less can send the treatment plan off track.

One of the least popular aspect of Invisalign is the need for attachments. Many patients need small transparent blobs of material fixed to their teeth to help the aligners to grip the teeth and help the teeth to move. This increases the visibility of the aligners and also makes them much more difficult to remove.

The aligners are quite difficult to insert and remove at the beginning and I found that this was made much worse by the attachments. However after a few weeks it became second nature and several months in it is not a problem.

One of the most annoying things about Invisalign is the need to clean

and floss after eating and drinking anything except water. Otherwise sugars could become trapped between the aligner and the teeth causing decay. Also, if excellent hygiene isn’t maintained the aligners and the patients breath can start to smell.

Invisalign are offered by both orthodontists and general dentists. This makes it very important to choose your provider carefully as there is huge differences in the amounts of experience. The Invisalign website contains lists of providers and ranks them by experience.

Some Invisalign providers only offer treatment for simple cases, although my own orthodontist will treat any orthodontic case with Invisalign and claims that it is often faster than traditional treatment. This is why it is so important to seek several opinions to find the right dentist or orthodontist for you.
