There was a moment in Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) where Mr. Hand stated that everybody is on dope. I would like to agree and say that his statement rings true, both for today’s audiences as well as newcomer Hollywood directors. They’re all on dope. What happens when people take dope you ask? They make feature films that are packed wall-to-wall

with repetitive ADD chase sequences and filmmaking.

Welcome to the 21st century where every single action film is trying to be like The Bourne Identity instead of harnessing its own style. Eagle Eye is one of those films. The plot centers around young man (LaBeouf) who works at a Kinkos-type copy center and a single mother (Monaghan) whom both become entangled into a big governmental mess when an anonymous female caller gives them instruction after instruction in order ...

      • to carry out plans that are like that of a terrorist organization. Come to find out, this anonymous female caller happens to be a high-tech spying device called Eagle Eye and it looks like a giant Hal-9000 although situated in a room surrounded by light-bulbs as Hype Williams was using it to shoot music videos.

It’s hard to believe that this was an original idea thought up by Steven Spielberg back in the 1990s, but being that he

went on to do Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, this got passed on to D.J. Caruso who also directed the previous Shia LaBeouf film Disturbia. I read somewhere that Caruso wanted the film to be gritty and feel like it was from the 1970s era. Well, good job with messing that one up. Since when do films from the 1970s play out with ADD symptoms as if there were crack smeared all over the camera lens?
