  • On a recent stay in Victoria, I decided to eat at a restaurant I had seen earlier that day, called Café Marrakech, mainly because I had been to Marrakech, Morocco the year before so I was curious as to just how authentic this place is
  • The central location, just a few blocks away from the Inner Harbour and the Empress, is convenient, although parking is always an issue in the downtown core, so walk if you are staying close by
  • The outside of the restaurant is very new-looking, and there is a patio with a fountain, which I know is extremely authentic in Morocco
  • We were seated right away, by an employee who appears to be Northern African, and we decided to request mint tea, which to me would prove authenticity, and sure enough, we were quickly served the sweet, delicious tea that is the main drink in Morocco
  • There are soups and salads for starters are definitely choices I recognized from my travels in Morocco

On a recent stay in Victoria, I decided to eat at a restaurant I had seen earlier that day, called Café Marrakech, mainly because I had been to Marrakech, Morocco the year before so I was curious as to just how authentic this place is.

The central location, just a few blocks away from the Inner Harbour and the Empress, is convenient, although parking is always an issue in the downtown core, so walk if you are staying close by. The outside of the restaurant is very new-looking, and there is a patio with a fountain, which I know is extremely authentic in Morocco. Inside, the décor is tasteful with dark

colours and is very clean. We were seated right away, by an employee who appears to be Northern African, and we decided to request mint tea, which to me would prove authenticity, and sure enough, we were quickly served the sweet, delicious tea that is the main drink in Morocco. So far, so good.

We sipped our tea and looked over the menu. The first thing I noticed on the menu is that it is noted that all the meat is halal (it sounds awful, but Islamic culture demands that the meat is bled before it is cooked). I have not really noticed a different taste with halal meat, but it ...

      • is a must for many. There are soups and salads for starters are definitely choices I recognized from my travels in Morocco. The tajines offered are authentic, and have fish, lamb, chicken, lamb, beef and meatball tajines, for $12-$20, and Moroccan desserts-this is a very authentic Moroccan menu. As well, there is no alcohol on the menu, and while that may be unsettling to some, it is how they live in Morocco.

I ordered the kufta (meatballs), with tomatoes and mint, and my companion had lamb couscous. I also had the tomato and cucumber salad to start. Our food was served promptly, and it was all great and authentic-with many flavours

of mint, paprika and other herbs and spices. The portions are excellent. The fact that the mint is fresh and comes through in all the food reminded me of Morocco. The lamb was tender and tasted as if it had been stewing all day, which is how they do it in Morocco, and my meatballs were excellent. I am very impressed with this restaurant. The owner came over and said hello to all the tables, and I told him that his restaurant reminded me of my travels in Morocco and he was very happy.

Café Marrakech serves authentic Moroccan food, and I will be back whenever I am in Victoria.
