When you are in East Java Province of Indonesia, where do you want to go for a water vacation? The answer is the Popoh Beach in Tulungagung. What would it be for a mountain vacation? It’s obviously the Batu mountains in Malang. But when it comes to both of water and mountain vacation, you can mark this: The Sarangan Lake.

Yeah, the Sarangan Lake is such a unique tourism spot which combines beautiful sceneries of a 75-hectare-wide lake and a 1600-meter-high Mount Lawu located in Magetan, about 5 hours trip from Surabaya. Water sensation with cool air of green mountain, you got them all.

However it is commonly believed that the attractiveness of a tourism place has a great

thing to do with professional management. And, that is exactly what I would like to say NO for the Sarangan Lake. One thing, don’t take it a big thing when you are just in and about to search available space to park your car (Because I don’t want to upset you for this first disappointing experience). What is it? A poor managed parking area. That’s it! You won’t see a large cozy car zone separated from the recreation spot. You’ll find cars getting in crowd with tourists in the main recreation area instead. People are mixed with cars, motorcycles, and even buses. It brings about crowd and distress.

What can we do in that place? Sure things: sailing ...

      • around the lake on a speed boat and riding on a horse around the lake side. The boat fare for one lap is 40,000 rupiah (or about $ 4). It’s quite a little too high, but still moderate afterall. For a horse riding, it costs 25,000 rupiah riding along the lake side covering 3 km length. This one is quite cheap, because the coach has to walk on foot beside the horse on which I ride. The bad thing, a horse riding will never be a comfortable experience since, like I said before, the area is filled with crowd.

What about the food? Well, the Sarangan Lake offers its distinct food: chicken and hare sate (a kind of barbequed

meat), meat ball, baked corn, baked bread, and angsle (traditional ginger brew flavoured with beans). They are tasty enough, suitable with cold air to warm our body. Wait, talking about shortcoming, most of the food vendors are not organised. They’re purely street vendors who try to avail themselves by selling their food in the recreation ground. They station their portable kiosks in an irregular way. So, they accordingly worsen the crowd.

What else to mention of the Sarangan Lake? It is the hotels. It seems to be nice to spend a night in that place feeling the cold breeze. But I’ve never tried to book a hotel within that spot. I think I can think about it later time.
