  • Unless you plan to spend many days exploring the museum, you simply will not see it all, so avoid disappointment and prioritize and plan before you go
  • We walked the half and hour or so from our hotel and entered at one of several entrances, right by the glass pyramids outside the complex, which are a recent, and in my opinion, out of place addition
  • After we saw these two things, we consulted the map and decided that we would tackle the Egyptian section, and we spent the next couple of hours looking at the amazing and awe-inspiring collection of ancient art
  • Then, if you have time, see a few more things, and this way, you will not be overwhelmed or disappointed

No trip to Paris can or should be contemplated without a visit to Musée du Louvre, and it had been a dream of mine since I was a small child. I did discover, though, that if you are on a limited time frame for seeing the city, as I was, you need to determine what you really need and want to see in the museum, and not to worry about only seeing a small portion of this magnificent and famous landmark. Unless you plan to spend many days exploring the museum, you simply will not see it all, so avoid disappointment and prioritize and plan before you go.

We were very lucky to be staying close by the Louvre in the Left Bank, so we were actually able to walk there. Before coming to Paris, we knew we wanted to see

the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame and to explore the Left Bank. We already planned that our visit to the Louvre would be 4-5 hours, and that we wanted to see the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo, and after that, to see what we could in our limited time in the city. We walked the half and hour or so from our hotel and entered at one of several entrances, right by the glass pyramids outside the complex, which are a recent, and in my opinion, out of place addition. The lineup to buy tickets was very long, which was a bit frustrating, but for sites as famous as this one, it is just a necessary pain. We bought a day pass for 9 euro each, and set out to explore, with maps of course-this museum is so ...

      • big that it would be very easy to get lost. We first entered the long line to the room where the Mona Lisa is kept behind dark and thick security glass. Honestly, there is little point in taking pictures, because the glass obstructs the painting. However, my ‘moment’ came as I watched the crowds staring at this painting, because at that moment I realized just how many people have viewed this piece of iconic art. It was worth the half hour wait to get into that room. By far this area is the busiest. Next, we went to see Venus de Milo, which was another moment for me. This statue was better to view, because it was not encased in glass. After we saw these two things, we consulted the map and decided that we would tackle the Egyptian section,
and we spent the next couple of hours looking at the amazing and awe-inspiring collection of ancient art. The museum itself, of course, is a work of art itself. It was a wonderful day.

After we reluctantly left, we took a quick look at the gift shop, because I wanted to buy a book on the Louvre, as I had seen only such a small part of it. For only 20 euro, I purchased a very beautiful book where I can look at the beautiful pictures at my leisure. Musée du Louvre is an absolutely breathtaking museum, but you should plan ahead to get the most out of your visit-decide what you need and want to see most, and see that first. Then, if you have time, see a few more things, and this way, you will not be overwhelmed or disappointed.
