  • The second song 'Empty Standing' is probably my favourite lyrically because its a lovely story where melanie sings Alone is the sailor at sea, only wind and waves for company, Theres nothing else to be seen, Just the starts shining brightly at night
  • The unpredictable melodies and chord changes make this album in my opinion
  • I find that the lyrics on this album depends on what you as the listener hear and how you take the meaning which is great if you are a person that really likes to break the lyrics apart and understand what the artist is singing about which is what i like to do
  • This song is the barest song on the album with mainley guitar and vocals , i think this makes the song because it has such a raw sound to it
  • Finally (or is it) the song sanity which yet again one of my favourites is a beautiful piece with a breathtaking melody and an AMAZING chorus yet again vocals are outstanding and harmonies are very well placed

So recently i picked up a cd alot diffrent from the music i am usually interested in and decided to review it and tell you all what i thought.

Melanie Gent is a local Folk singer/songwriter that sings straight from the heart with deep insightful lyrics and unpredictable chord changes. She has performed as such things as Cygnet Folk Festival and the Taste of the Huon.

But now on to the cd,

The album kicks off with the first song ‘Sleep’, a chilling number with a very catchy guitar melody and beautiful lyrics which are acompanied by Melanie’s Chilled out soothing voice (the harmonies on this album really add alot to the overall feel off this album).

The second song ‘Empty Standing’ is probably my favourite lyrically because its a lovely story where melanie sings “Alone is the sailor at sea, only wind and waves for company, Theres nothing else to be seen, Just the starts shining brightly at night”.

The unpredictable melodies and chord changes make this album in my opinion. If your after cheesy lyrics and predictable melodies you wont find that here.

The Next song ‘Inside Out’ took me a little while to get into but after a few listens it totally grew on me which is probably due to the relaxed doumbek played in the background, almost gives it a tribal feel.

I find that the lyrics on this album depends on what you as the listener hear and how you take the meaning which is great if you are a person that

really likes to break the lyrics apart and understand what the artist is singing about which is what i like to do.

‘The Rain Keeps Falling Down’ is the next song which is one of my favourites off the album. To me it actually gives you the feel of falling rain which is great just to sit back in a comfy chair and listen to it. This song is the barest song on the album with mainley guitar and vocals , i think this makes the song because it has such a raw sound to it. yet again lyrics are really nice.

The title track ‘Stand’ is probably the weakest on the album in my opinion, im not sure why, the melody just doesnt take to me when compared to the other tracks on the album. The harmonica adds alot to this song though.

The next song is an amazing little song Titled ‘Old River’ which is a standout track on this album (i often think the album should have been called Old River).

Now the melody and guitar on this song are absolutley breathtaking and if you have had a chance to catch melanie live this song is a highlight because i just get a huge amount of emotion from this song. The lyrics and organ in this song are amazing, if a choir had been itroduced to this song it would be so powerful.

‘Together’ is the next track which is another one that took me abit to get into but yet again after a ...

      • few listens it grew on me. The Harmonies are really nice on this song and the guitar melody is great. the chorus is a simple yet very blunt and straight forward where Melanie sings: “Today, We’ll find a way to be, Together, We’ll be today”.

Song number 8 is “Waters Edge” is another standout song on the album. Everything in this song is amazing the chorus is the nicest thing you’ll ever hear and the overall flow of the song sets such a chilled out mood.If your lucky enough to check out Melanies other release “In This Place” you should check out her other version of this song, its very cool and so creative im a huge fan of it.

The next song has a very diffrent feel to it, almost frightneing at times.

The chord progression is very cool and Melanies vocals take a whole diffrent level, the lyrics are haunting. “i see you when i sleep, on my riddled ship by night, i see you in my dreams, and i reach out, its so real”. Very Very haunting lyrics, but a really heartfelt song at that.

The next song is ‘Lifted’, yet again the same stuff said: catchy melody without being predictable, soothing guitar work, and nice harmonies. The Chorus is the highlight of this song with a really nice melody and strong lyrics.

‘Change’ follows with a very catchy guitar melody and heartfelt lyrics and vocals.

The lead guitar work in this song is really nice and work very well with the Chords

        that are being played.

The chorus is very cool and i think Melanies vocals are at her best in this one.

Finally (or is it) the song sanity which yet again one of my favourites is a beautiful piece with a breathtaking melody and an AMAZING chorus yet again vocals are outstanding and harmonies are very well placed. Lyrically this song is one of my favourites because it sets such a strong theme and is such a relaxing emotional song( note how i use the word “emotional” alot in this review, its because it is it just sounds so heartfelt and the lyrics are all real nothing fake and cheesy).

Melanie sneakily slips a Bonus song after ‘Sanity’ titled ‘The Little Song’ which is a perfect sum up going for a total of 2 minutes twenty tyhe shortest song on the album. This song is just a really nice closer and a perfect way to end the album.

So There you have my review of ‘Stand’ By Melanie Gent.

Stand out Tracks: Old River, Water’s Edge, Sanity, So Real.

        Overall rating: 7/10

I also strongly reccommend checking out her older release “In This Place” My favourite Release of hers, Very creative and very raw.

Check this cd out if you like lyrics from the heart, melodic guitar, soothing vocals, and catchy melodies.

For people new to this genre it may take a few listens to get into as it did me but give it a chance cause its worth it .
