  • Gameplay 7/10 Vandal Hearts is I think the first tactical rpg for the Playstation 1 developed by Konami
  • What will they encounter after this incident is what makes this game amazing when it comes to storyline
  • I like the characters portraits though and after battle conversations because you can see what the characters really look like

Gameplay 7/10 Vandal Hearts is I think the first tactical rpg for the Playstation 1 developed by Konami. The player gets to control characters in the field like a chess game trying to beat all the enemy units in a turn basis or at time having different victory conditions such as rescuing a character in the battle. Each character can put equipments and items before the battles and this plays a big factor in winning battles. You also have to strategize on how to move your characters precisely to your advantage so that no one of your them dies. Every stage a character’s level goes up depending on how you use them so that means you got to give equal opportunities for everybody which I think is great. Character jobs are predetermined but you are able to change

them once they reach a certain level but the choices are only a few which I didn’t quite like.

Story 9/10 The game starts out with three mercenary characters named Ash, Clint and Diego. They are a part of the third batallion of Ishtarian Security forces trying to wipe out thieves and scoundrels that roam the land. What starts out as a simple task for them later becomes tedious when they begin to find out that they were framed for the killing of an official making them castaways like the people they were trying to kill. What will they encounter after this incident is what makes this game amazing when it comes to storyline. There are so many twists and turns in the game I was excited what’s going to happen next that I was able to finish the ...

      • game in a week. The characters here are likeable and the way the game approached it, no one was left out and every story was told for each. I personally like the love story of Clint and Kira in the game.

Graphics 5/10 Graphics of the game isn’t that good since it is one of the early 32 bit tactical games. The characters are small but visible enough in 3d backgrounds. The color of the battlefields is dull and pixelated but since it’s one of the early games for the console it can accepted. I like the characters portraits though and after battle conversations because you can see what the characters really look like. Overall, just average graphics.

Music 6.5/10 The music in the game is pretty average. There are three to four memorable tunes. There are no character

voice-ins but remember that the tactical rpgs at this era was at its infancy. You’ll probably remember this game for the story not the music.

Replayability 4/10 A one playthrough is enough because the game doesn’t offer that much replayability. Only reason for you to replay is if you want to see the characters in other classes you haven’t picked them as before and if you weren’t able to collect the hidden items that make Ash the “Vandalier” class which is hard to get if you miss out on just one item. I actually replayed it ony my part.

Overall Vandal Hearts is not the best tactical rpg the playstation 1 has to offer because there is Final Fantasy Tactics. But if you want to play a game that has a very interesting and compelling story then you might want to try this out for sure.
