  • The issue I first had was that this website had lots of choices for small, medium and SUVs available, and when I phoned, there was literally an Echo for small cars, a Pontiac for the medium size, and an Explorer for the SUV-and that was the extent of the selection

I was trying to rent a car the other day and it turned into such a nightmare that I ended up writing a letter to the company to express my frustration. I had never used Budget Car and Truck Rental before, but the location was nearby and I assumed they were reputable and professional. It was such a simple request, but it became a ridiculous waste of time.

I first went on the Budget website, at www.budget.com, to see what the rates and vehicle choices were. I did manage to get a look at their fleet, which I have to say was limited at best, and couldn’t get any information on rates except that

‘off-peak’ was less expensive than peak-duh!

The issue I first had was that this website had lots of choices for small, medium and SUVs available, and when I phoned, there was literally an Echo for small cars, a Pontiac for the medium size, and an Explorer for the SUV-and that was the extent of the selection. I asked why the website showed several models for each size range and was told that the website showed all of North America locations generally, and that each location and each city had a different selection. Then I asked about rates. I told them I just needed the base rate from for two days mid-week, as I ...

      • was going between Calgary and Edmonton, and I would figure out the gas prices. The person I spoke to asked me to come in, and I just replied that I simply needed the base rate, and that then I would compare prices, and that I didn’t have the time to come in just to get a price. He said the rates ranged from $49.99 for the small, economy vehicle to over $100 for the large or luxury vehicles. But then I asked him for clarification, given that there was only one choice for each size available. He gave me a few prices, which didn’t make any sense at all to me-for instance, why
would a compact car, a model that wasn’t available there anyway, be $60 and an SUV, which also wasn’t available there, be $50? I ended up hanging up without any prices, and going to another website of another company, and was able to get the information I needed to make a choice. It ended up being cheaper to fly, but seriously, Budget, at least at this location, needs to do some work. First of all, the staff needs to be more knowledgeable about their products and prices, and also, the website needs to explain that each location has a different selection of vehicles. I will not be renting from Budget in the near future.
