For travelers from the UK visiting Quito, there are a few different bars and restaurants that offer comforts of home. One that gives the genuine feel and experience of a traditional English bar is The Reina Victoria Pub.

The Reina Victoria is steeped in English Pub tradition. Coats of arms, bottles, and a roaring fire transform the inside from Ecuador to London. The menu has Sheppard’s Pie and the feeling that one must somehow remain understated and proper semi-seriously grabs ones attention as the English owner makes her way from table to bar.

The understated attitude of the Reina Victoria is refreshing for a bar in the tourist district. One feels that they can just relax, have a beer, and strike up a conversation with a

fellow patron without worrying about multitudes of backpackers or loud music and pick-up lines. To put it in a strictly English way, The Reina Victoria is civilized.

This civility seems to spread to the guests who visit the Reina Victoria. The adopt an attitude of respect for their surrounding and often seem a bit confused as to what the correct procedures for going about enjoying their time at the pub are. This is a bit over-the-top for the circumstances. The owners not only have produced a genuine English Pub, they have created a friendly atmostspere as well. Travelers and locals who frequent The Reina Victoria do so more for the people than for the decorations.

The owners of The Reina Victoria sponsor a pub quiz ...

      • a few Wednesdays a month that benefits the South American Explorers Club. The Club is a non-profit organization that provides information about travelling in Ecuador. Their comprehensive, detailed service is one of the best innovations in Ecuador. One reason the Reina Victoria sponsors the fun, fact-filled event because it also strives to provide similar services to those travelling in Ecuador.

On a recent visit the staff at the pub were seen helping first time visitors with answers to questions about visas, recommending good hostels that they would personally stay at, and offering to find information about a guide currently operating in Ecuador.

What stands out besides for the charm and friendliness of the staff is the cocktail menu. A wide variety of cocktails from old school

bartending are available. The usual drinks served in Quito’s bars are available: Cuba Libres, vodka tonics, and godfathers. Complimenting them are gin and tonics and a wide array of choices that showcase the abilities of the bartender as well as the well stocked bar. In a country where cocktails are normally limited to fewer than ten, this alone is worth the stop in Quito´s answer to an English Pub.

Tucked back from the main street that takes tourists in taxis from one end of the Mariscal to the other, the Reina Victoria Pub is an environment where one can go and relax while enjoying a somewhat more sophisticated evening among patrons who gather to enjoy the great hospitality and good company.
