Tour companies abound in Quito. In a city that promotes all of it´s clubs, tours, restaurants, and events by fliers and posters, one only has to look around the nearest hotel or restaurant for companies offering paradise to every traveler that is willing to shell out a few hundred dollars. A good place to start when curious about Ecuador is Quito itself. The city houses historic plazas and beautiful cathedrals along with museums and monuments that are definitely worth investing time to see. One way to get your bearings and figure out what you are interested in is a free tour of the historic center offered by Tzanza tours every Monday.

The tour begins at nine o´clock every Monday at Plaza Grande. This Plaza is the home to the presidential

residence and can be reached by taxi for a few dollars from New Town. The guides are generally located near the statue in the middle of the square and are very informative as well as bi-lingual. They are recognizable by their black shirts with the company name emblazoned on the back.

the historic center of Quito is very rich in history and paints a better picture of real life for Ecuadorians in Quito. The museums and cathedrals on the tour are scattered over roughly an eight block radius. What makes the tour worthwhile is that the guides not only show off the historic aspects of Quito but also are interested in showing off the local products that are made and sold in the historic center.

As someone who has spent days exploring ...

      • the historic center I am not one to sign up for tours. What I have found when exploring on my own is that my lack of Spanish and ignorance when it comes to food, cleanliness, and local expertise prevents me from exploring certain aspects of South American culture. I can climb cathedrals, rummage around plazas, and stumble my way into museums that have everything posted in Spanish. What the Tzanza tour offers is a way to explore the aspects of Quito´s culture with a guide who can give you first hand expertise about local products and the customs that Ecuadorians follow.

Expect to be given a brief overview of the history of Ecuador from the Spanish occupation to the present. Places with free admission are included and specific traditonal products and

food are presented as options and not as sales pitches. The entire tour takes about three and a half hours.

After taking a free tour of the historic center there are many other options to consider if wishing to continue exploring with a guide. Tzanza offers a full day option for sixty dollars or other companies such as The Happy Gringo offer a half day reality option that takes groups off the beaten track and further into the regions occupied by primarily locals and Spanish speakers.

Given the immense history and depth of the traditional local culture in Ecuador I have found that it is essential to start exploring the country with a little local expertise. The free tour offered by Tzanza makes starting the process of finding a guide a little bit easier!

I am living in Mexico and I went to quito five years ago, I didnt have the opportunity to explore the city in a free city tour, there is any phone number that I can contact the company, I consider really attractive a tour like this, but I want to know that is true that is totally free and if the guides are bilingual. Thanks a lot. Best Regards Luis Fernandez
