Jay-Z “Dead Presidents” Reasonable Doubt Roc-A-Fella Records Director: Abdul Malik Abbott

Jay-Z returned after his debut single and music video “In My Lifetime” about a year later with his very first album titled “Reasonable Doubt”. This is the first single and music video from that album, “Dead Presidents”. The song concerns the underworld of drug dealing and has grown to be a classic Hip Hop track and

one of Jay-Z’s finest in his collection.

The music video has a somewhat cinematic-like quality to it and looks a bit more interesting than the concept he came up with for his “In My Lifetime” music video. Jay-Z and Damon Dash are dropped off via helicopter somewhere on the docks of New York City, from there they hop in a parked car that’s waiting for them.

      • They drive around and are followed by a suspicious red van (oh yes, red is so symbolic for evil, isn’t it? And then one of the evil men in the van happens to be a white dude… yeah… uh-huh).

While Jay-Z raps within a warehouse and in front of the World Trade Center, he and Damon drive to an area beneath the Brooklyn Bridge (on the Brooklyn

side of course) where they conduct a “business transaction” with a dude wearing an army jacket. Moments later, they’re both spying on and taking pictures of the dude as he argues with his home girl. Then another scene shows Jay-Z and Damon at a poker table, playing a round with several friends including the Notorious B.I.G. Hey, it’s still cliche but it’s a heck of a lot more nitty-gritty than “In My Lifetime”.
