The Mariscal section of Quito is considered the tourist Mecca of the sprawling city. Within a five block radius from Plaza Foch One can find restaurants, tour agencies, and Spanish schools. As a traveler who prefers to experience a country from the ground up I normally tend to shy away from areas set up to accommodate gringos. One place that I make an exception of this rule for is Bungalow 6.

Bungalow 6 is a night club in the heart of the Mariscal that caters to travelers and students. Wednesday nights are legendary because Bungalow offers free drinks for women from seven to ten. Lines are often long and the small club gets packed. I don’t normally go to such

high traffic clubs and have avoided Bungalow previously but presently stand corrected in my assumptions after a recent visit.

The reason for my new found optimism about Bungalow is their new addition of a second floor set apart from the crowded dance floor and main floor.

Before the addition the club was situated on the first floor with a bar and tables surrounding the small dance floor. More often than not, the club would fill up to capacity and dance became a contact sport. The new upstairs satellite bar and comfortable two rooms gives guests a choice to either be a part of the action downstairs or sit and have a conversation in the upstairs. The third floor offers pool table and a dart ...

      • board.

With the new additions also comes a new menu. Huge burgers and searing hot wings are high points on the menu.

My idea of a good bar is exactly what Bungalow┬┤s new addition offers. The second floor has three rooms. One houses the bar, another contains dart boards, and the last is a big room filled with comfortable seats and tables.

Decorated with posters from the sixties to the present, this room is my favorite. It is located far enough away from the dance floor that conversations are possible without shouting. The mellow vibe and the decorations lend toward enjoying the company of others because the setting itself is fun. It reminds me of a cool college

town bar that has decorations everywhere and room after room of different themes. I can imagine in the future that hats and shirts will hang from the ceiling as travelers and locals alike become more frequent.

There are a lot of options for travelers visiting Quito when it comes to nightlife. Clubs are compacted into a eight block radius that offers dance, trance, alternative, and rock venues. At first glance, Bungalow six is just another place to blow off stream on a Wednesday night. After finding my way past the crowded dance floor and up the stairs to the new additions, I believe it is establishing itself as a different kind of bar for locals to enjoy themselves as well as tourists.
