  • All in all, I would recommend this grocery store to those who appreciate small town values, even if they have big town prices

I’ve always been a supporter of large grocery chains such as Walmart supercenter and Kroger, however, I was immediately won over by this more compact chain of stores, once owned by its namesake, the VanGilders. Though the VanGilders have since retired, and the company is now owned by Spartan, one of their grocery suppliers, the store still holds a lot of the small-town business charm that won me over in the first place.

      Of course, with small-town business

also comes more expensive prices. Though there is a neighboring Kroger competing for grocery business, VG’s never seems to be hurting for customers, because their customer base is forever loyal. This also, however, means that their prices don’t reflect that of their competitors. Their departments are always clean and well-organized, and I appreciate that it’s a smaller store, which means less overwhelming and easier to find the products I buy on a regular basis. The produce department,

      • in particular, always carries fresh product that is only comparible to that of local fruit and vegetable stands.

With that said, however, I’ve found that I can save a LOT of money by visiting their competitors, because their prices do not sufficiently relate to their loyal customers. I guess, though, that you’re paying for the employees and their smiles and helpfulness, as well as the food, and in that regard, the prices are fair. The associates are always

available, and eager to give rainchecks if the items you’re looking for are not in stock. They are even willing to special order items they don’t normally carry if you request it. In most instances, the associates know the customers, if not by name, then by face, and their warm greetings are, by me, very well received.

All in all, I would recommend this grocery store to those who appreciate small town values, even if they have “big town” prices.
