  • I would recommend also visiting downtown, chinatown, the Ala Moana Center (for shopping and eating at a very inexpensive food court with delicious food), the Ala Moana Beach Park and the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbour
  • Also in the Waikiki Beach area, the Atlantis Submarine tour is a wonderful experience
  • For someone like me, who would never have the courage to dive, this is the best way of seeing the underwater environment

Honolulu is the capital city of the Hawaiian Islands and is situated on the island of Oahu. It is a modern city on a beautiful tropical island. The main tourist area is Waikiki Beach and, although this area is great to visit, there is so much more to Honolulu than just Waikiki Beach.

I would recommend also visiting downtown, chinatown, the Ala Moana Center (for shopping and eating at a very inexpensive food court with delicious food), the Ala Moana Beach Park and the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbour. One of my best memories of Honolulu is having

dinner at a Waikiki beachside restaurant and watching the sun beginning to set.

We then walked on the beach in the twilight and admired the stunning natural beauty of the coastline while the waves lapped at our feet. If you are on a budget, a reasonably priced restaurant on Waikiki Beach is Duke’s at The Outrigger Hotel in Waikiki.

The all-you-can-eat salad bar there is fantastic and the live Hawaiian music just adds to the atmosphere. Also in the Waikiki Beach area, the Atlantis Submarine tour is a wonderful experience.

A boat takes you from Waikiki Beach to ...

      • the site of the submarine in which you dive to 100 feet below sea level. You see all kinds of beautiful, colourful fish, turtles, coral and other sea life.

For someone like me, who would never have the courage to dive, this is the best way of seeing the underwater environment. Outside of Waikiki, you can visit Pearl Harbour and the Arizona Memorial.

I found this to be a very moving experience, especially when I stood on the Arizona Memorial and saw the oil in the water that is still leaking from the USS Arizona. At that moment,

the reality of this terrible tragedy struck me: the ship is still under the water in the place where it sank in 1941 and those who died remain in the ship with their names now inscribed on the Memorial.

If you do not restrict yourself to the popular tourist areas, you will get so much more out of your visit to Honolulu. I would also recommend at least getting out of the city and seeing a bit more of the island of Oahu, and, if you can, going to the other Hawaiian Islands as there are so many more beautiful places to visit.
