I’m one who enjoys a good religious holiday film, and one of my favorites is King of Kings from 1961. This is a remake of the silent classic and stars Jeffrey Hunter. I adore Hunter. He was an incredible actor

who could draw me in to most any role. This one, though, is his most riveting and most compelling.

Playing Christ is not an easy task. It has to be done with reverence and played with a certain humility. There really aren’t that many who can play the role with just the right subtleness, emitting vulnerability, confidence, innocence, and strength, all at the same time. Hunter is able to do all of that and more. He’s believability from start to finish.

He was a younger portrayal of Jesus than was usual in films, but the truth was that at that point in time, his age was the closest of any other actor playing the role to Christ’s true age in the story.

      The film’s narration

is solidly recited by the great Orson Welles. The words themselves come from a literary giant in Ray Bradbury.

King of Kings is a good reminder of the story of Jesus. It’s usually on television during Easter and sometimes Christmas. I highly recommend it.
