Buckingham Fountain is one of the most popular landmarks in the city of Chicago, both for its beauty and because of the history tied to it. It helps a lot that this huge and magnificent fountain is smack in the middle of the city, right along the park and the Lake where everything important happens in the city. I think everyone that has traveled to Chicago has been to see the fountain, and if you have not, you most likely have not been to the neatest corner of the city.

If you are traveling to Chicago, it is a great treat to get to see Buckingham fountain when it is on, because for half of the year the cold weather keeps the fountain off. When the fountain is turned on, it is a big to do in the city, because it

means that summer is here and spring is coming. There is actually a big ceremony the weekend that the fountain is turned on and the weekend that it is turned off everyone comes out to see it. One of the big things that attracts so many people to the fountain is the light show that takes place at night. There is no music or anything, but there are tons of lights that are choreographed to the jets as the water shoots out higher and faster.

Buckingham Fountain really is a city landmark and when you are there you can understand why because there are very few fountains in the world that are this prominent and this large. The cool thing too is that you can pretty much get right up to the fountain as it is not tucked away and ...

      • then cornered off, but very much a part of the most famous city park. I always enjoy going downtown with the family and packing a lunch to enjoy in the vicinity. If you get there on a nice windy day you might even get sprayed with the water as it shoots up very high several times.

The fountain is also a great photo taking spot, and so many people come out to photograph the fountain as well as themselves in front of it. I have taken so many pictures of myself here as well as the details on the fountain because it is so beautiful and I don’t think it is going to be around forever. Every year the city is talking about turning the fountain off for good because of the amount of repairs it needs to

keep it going forever and the amount of money it takes to maintain and repair it. Still, I think everyone in Chicago can agree that the city would definitely be different without this landmark.

If you are visiting Chicago, make sure you get out to see the fountain. I love it and I get to see it in action several times a year. Just head downtown, get to Grant Park and the fountain is smack in the middle– well almost. You cannot miss it though. Oh yeah, it is free as is the park, just make sure you don’t go to see it when there is a festival or event going on in the Park as it is impossible to get around all the people and there are way too many people around to take some decent pictures.
