Animal, Vegetable, Miracle is the memoir of author Barbara Kingsolver, her ecology professor husband, and their two daughters on their quest to eat only local food for a year. With this intent, they move to rural Virginia and plant as much food as possible, buy the rest from farmers markets and local vendors,

and cook, can and process as much as possible for the winter.

This book is wonderful. Told through seasons over the course of a year, it is designed to show that what was expected to be a challenge and an experience of deprivation turns out to be truly a joy. The descriptions of ...

      • everything from asparagus growing to cheese making make me hungry and make me yearn for simpler times. Of course, Kingsolver proves that these simpler times are not so far away by accomplishing all of these things herself.

Science is interspersed throughout her story, but this is not a text book. This is a

story of one family and their experiences for one year. Overall, it is a story of really great food, with sidebars and recipes throw in to make the whole thing even more helpful. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who loves good writing and is interested in the food that we eat.
