Peter Sellars returns to the roll of Inspector Clouseau after having seen him last in the popular Shot in the Dark. The plot of Return of the Pink Panther finds things pretty well back to normal. Dreyfus is still Clouseau’s boss, even after having taken drastic measures to dispose of him the last time around. It would appear that nobody found out about

that. Clouseau is still pretty well clueless and having to ward off servant Cato’s attacks. The famous Pink Panther is also, once again, stolen and the Phantom (Christopher Plummer) is suspected but innocent this time around. While Clouseau is sent on the case of finding the Phantom, the theif tries to find the real theif, leading him closer to home than at first ...

      • suspected.

When Return of the Pink Panther focuses on Clouseau it is hilarious. Sellars is a knack at finding the humour in any situation and his Clouseau is a marvelous creation. Equally fine is Herbert Lom as the poor harried Dreyfus. We can sympathize with him at the same time we laugh at his mishaps, particularly one that involves a lighter shaped as a

        gun.

However, when it focuses on the Phantom the film drags. I can just see how Plummer would relish his dashing role but it doesn’t work for me. Maybe because I’m not a huge Plummer fan. He doesn’t have the charm that David Niven had in the first Panther film.

Luckily, this was fixed for the next film, focusing on the Dreyfus/Clouseau relaltionship primarily instead.
