Alandaluz is situated half an hour outside of Peurto Lopez. After taking a bus from Quito and a cab from Peurto Lopez I arrived at the stunning beach-front resort.

The resort is a cross between Eco-lodge and vacation spot for people from neighboring cities on the coast. I immediately liked the open air construction of the main lodge. A bar and restaurant were nestled underneath a bamboo thatch roof which led the way over a bridge to the beach.

The ocean front is secluded as the nearby town of Montanita attracts surfers and backpackers leaving Alandaluz to

      those wishing only to relax.

The motto of Alandaluz is “a passionate embrace for life” and it became clear what is meant by that the longer I stayed. The staff took great pride in maintaining the beautiful gardens each morning. The kitchen and restaurant took care in serving a delicious variety of locally caught seafood and organically grown produce. They had a love for the place that spread to the guests and gave way to an enjoyment beyond that of a typical resort.

At night the common area filled up with tourists and locals whom lingered into ...

      • the night exchanging stories while getting to know each other. I have experienced a similar attitude in resort towns in Colorado where the scenery and comfort took the spotlight and those experiencing it became more outgoing as a result.

The resort has a few different options for sleeping that are divided into sections of the property. Basic accommodation starts at sixteen dollars while an ocean front double room costs seventy-five.

Transportation is primarily by bus and one can travel to Puerto Lopez and Montinita within an hour each direction.

Alandaluz advertises itself as an Eco-Lodge.

While there are plenty of varieties of plants and signs advising to conserve, it is still a work in progress. Recycling and community projects are slow going but I could see the potential for progress. The staff and their desire to improve were impressive and inspiring.

Along the Ruta del Sol there are many beaches that have excellent beaches, hostels, and wilderness attractions. Alandaluz can easily be forgotten in the hurry to get from one destination to another. Having stayed there for three weeks I believe this omission in travellers agendas to be an unfortunate one.
