Based on a Dean Koontz novel, Hideaway weaves the supernatural tale of what happens to one ordinary man when he returns to life after many minutes spent on the other side. It also shows the horrific repercusions of such a trip.

Hatch (Jeff Goldblum) is a nice guy, with a few problems. Having lost one daughter to a car accident, he is over protective of his elder daughter Regina (Alicia Silverstone). One night while Hatch, his wife Lindsey (Christine

Lahti) and Regina are driving they find themselves in a horrible accident, one where the two women survive but Hatch dies. While he is on the other side he glimpses his daughther and a mysterious light, only to be pulled back into the world of the living by Doctor (Alfred Molina). Thankful at first, Hatch soon finds himself haunted by visions in which a man murders young girls. Immediately thinking of his own daughter, Hatch unwittingly introduces the ...

      • girl to the serial killer who then intends to use the girl as part of his sculpture made of bones.

Hideaway has split most critics. While some liked it others have been negative, claiming that it doesn’t go anywhere or is led astray by its own special effects. I have even heard that Koontz wished his name be removed. I personally thought it was a good scary film. The villian is horrible and the plight of this family, and

particularly Hatch, who no one believes at first, is portrayed quite well. Be warned, though, it tends to get gruesome.

The effects are great but I never got the feeling that they were too focused on. They added to the feel of the film and its story and this made them not forced or unneeded. The performances were also good and I liked the final outcome since Lahti’s character became a strong heroine, and we saw the power of Light over Darkness.
