NASCAR’s Sprint Cup drivers drove the Lifelock 400 on June 14, 2009, and it was a very interesting race. There were just a handful of cautions, mostly for debris. The only racing incident that brought out the yellow flag was the 12-car getting loose, hitting the outside wall, and then taking a long glide across the track, onto pit road, and into the tire barrier. Driver David Stremme wasn’t hurt.

Red Bull driver Brian Vickers was on the poll but his car fizzled

pretty quickly. The dominant driver was Jimmie Johnson, but, much to my delight, he ran out of gas on Turn 4 of the final lap, finishing 22nd for the day. What was more fun, because I highly dislike Johnson, is that he did himself in by being greedy. He could have had a strong 2nd place finish, but he chose to challenge race leader Greg Biffle. As Denny Hamlin said after the race, they baited each other and both lost because ...

      • they ran out of gas.

What I was absolutely thrilled with was my favorite driver, Jeff Gordon, coming from the 43rd spot due to an engine change and finishing in 2nd place. In the opening 17 laps, he’d gained something like 12 spots, and he just continued marching forward the entire race. That was so much fun to watch.

The winner? The old man — Mark Martin, who won for the third time this season, moving his team into the 8th spot for the

Chase. I’m not really a Martin fan, but he’s a smarter driver and more of a team player than Johnson is. For that matter, I’m not a Biffle fan, either, but when Johnson overtook him and then lost speed and Biffle got by him, I was cheering for the Biff. Johnson only cares about himself. Ninety-eight percent of the time, he’s not a team player.

So, congratulations to Mark ‘the kid’ Martin, and a big way to go to the 24 team for a solid race.
