Project Gutenberg is amazing. I have been, and still am, a great reader throughout my life. When I was a kid I always looked forward to visiting the library where the entire universe lived. I used to dream about owning all of those books and having them to read whenever I wanted to.
Project Gutenberg (PG) allows me to do that. PG, located at http://www.gutenberg.org/ is a website that has more than 18,000 books that are in the public domain in the United States that you can download and read for FREE!.
Virtually all of the classic books are there as you might expect, but this is not just a collection of snobby books read only by literature teachers and librarians. Lots of popular books from yesterday and yesteryear are there as well. One of father?s favorite books when he grew up in the years before World War I was a book called ?Thirty-One Years on the Plains and in the Mountains, Or the Last Voice of the Plains? by William F. Drannan. For years, we looked in vain for that book. It?s there at PG waiting to be downloaded and read. Not only that, but another books is there to ?Chief of the Scouts.? I only wish my father were still alive to read them.
The books are stored in plain text format so they can be downloaded and read through any word processor at any time. You don't even need a library card!
