James Cagney has center stage in this 1950 salute to America’s West Point Academy, where the Army’s finest are schooled and trained. In this movie, Cagney plays Elwin Bixby, a Broadway director, who helps the cadets put on a show. Of course, it’s not quite that simple. Bix is a gambler and has a lousy

reputation as a result. No one will hire him, so the chance to stage West Point’s annual 100th Night Show for the graduating class is a very big deal. To get the gig, he has to try and recruit one of the cadets, convincing him to leave the military and become a Broadway actor.

      Doris Day stars ...

      • as one of the singing troops with Cagney. Of course, she takes a shine to the sought-after recruit, played by Gordon MacRae. These two have a very nice, believable chemistry and starred together four times, making MacRae the actor Day worked opposite the most, and not Rock Hudson, who most people associate her with. They’re
the ones who educate viewers about the Kissing Rock at the Academy.

There’s a lot of fun with The West Point Story, especially watching Cagney having to live like he’s a cadet himself. It changes his life, and it makes us laugh.

This is a very nice old style musical. It’s upbeat and ends happily. It’s just my style.
