Doris Day and Peter Graves star in The Ballad of Josie, a western more or less about a widowed woman who strives to keep her ranch going after the death of her husband. Though most of the town is against her, she perseveres, with the assistance and support, at least in part, of her good friend. Day is the widow, of course, by the name of Josie

with Graves as her neighbor rancher, Jason Meredith.

There are funny moments in this off beat movie for Day, who was one of the screen’s top actresses. Among the things I enjoyed the most are:

–Josie going shopping for an outfit that was better for running a ranch. When she buys jeans and a denim shirt, it’s pretty hysterical, and the reaction from Jason and the others is funny.

      • Of course, for jeans that should be too big, Josie’s were pretty tight fitting. Day’s figure shone through nicely.

–Josie playing with the wayward sheep while on a picnic with Jason. The sheep is way adorable, and combine Day’s natural love of animals with the scene for the movie, and it’s very cute.

–Josie bringing her herd of sheep into town. There’s nothing worse for cattlemen than to

have a herd of sheep around.

David Hartman is one of the co-stars in The Ballad of Josie, and he’s a favorite of mine, so I always enjoy seeing him, too. I miss Hartman with his average guy looks, great voice, and pleasant demeanor, even when he’s a villain.

The Ballad of Josie isn’t a great western; it’s barely a western, but it’s pure Day, and that works for me.
