  • It certainly did not look good as far as customer service, and truthfully, it was not convenient for us to come back
  • Therefore, Shaw GMC lost a potential sale, and would probably do well to fix this issue for future customers

      While shopping for vehicles, I have discovered that sometimes it’s the small things that make one dealership stand out amongst others; however, a rather large feature would be the ability to test-drive the vehicle you are interested in. Last week, the inability to do this at Shaw GMC in Calgary, Alberta, led to me scratching a vehicle off my list of possible purchases.

      We decided to look at all makes of dealerships in Calgary, as we were unsure of what vehicle to purchase, and although we were leaning toward a North American-made vehicle, we were not ruling anything out. One of our stops was Shaw GMC, and we walked into the showroom and browsed. Two of the vehicles we were interested in, but had not read up on or know much about, were the Acadia and the Buick


      Enclave and both were in the showroom, so we were able to look at the specs and the interior and exterior on our own. We finally did get the attention of one of the salespeople, who came over and discussed these two vehicles with us. He did not know much more about them than we did, actually, so we found the information sheet on the windshields just as informative as he was. The Acadia was about $50,000 and the Enclave was a bit more, for the base models, but we wanted to know what were the manufacturer’s and dealerships’ incentives, as all the other dealerships were offering thousands of dollars in incentives to the buyers. The salesperson said that there were ‘some’ incentives, and because he was a bit vague, we managed to prod him to tell ...

      • us of a few thousand dollars in incentives that could be available. So, although this was far less than some of the other places we had visited, we asked to take out the Acadia.

        The salesperson left to get keys for an Acadia on the lot, and we were very interested to see how it drove, given that it is quite a bit larger than some of the other SUVs we had been looking at. We followed the salesperson out to the lot, and he opened the driver’s side of one of the Acadia and attempted to start it. The engine would not turn over. Embarrassed, the salesperson, tried the next model, and it was the same thing. He apologized, and I felt a bit sorry for him, and went inside to get a battery charger. He returned

        quickly and told us it would be charging for a few minutes. We wandered around the lot, and went back to the Acadia several minutes later. It still wouldn’t turn over. The salesperson was very embarrassed and apologetic and asked if we could come back in the afternoon. We said we would, but we didn’t. Although we realized that this was certainly not the salesperson’s fault, Shaw GMC should have all the models that are available for test drives to be fully charged and ready to go; at the very least, this will allow customers to make an informed decision. It certainly did not look good as far as customer service, and truthfully, it was not convenient for us to come back. Therefore, Shaw GMC lost a potential sale, and would probably do well to fix this issue for future customers.
