Final Fantasy VII was a continuation of the Final Fantasy series (obviously the seventh installment) made for the Sony Playstation and released in 1997. It marked the first Final Fantasy to have abandoned the familiar sprite-based graphics in favor of the more modern polygon shapes and figures of the day.

Though it is 12 years later, Final Fantasy VII remains as one of the most beloved of the Final Fantasy series, and certainly is my personal favorite. The story-line puts forth some of the coolest characters that

have ever graced a television screen, characters such as Cloud and Sephiroth, both of whom still battle it out in gamer polls for who is the greatest protagonist , and antagonist in a video game. The story is moving, the characters fleshed out to become as real as one can expect from a video game. Gameplay follows classic Final Fantasy formula, with a turn-based battling system that involves the innovative “Materia” system which remains one of the most customizable and enjoyable battling systems. The music is ...

      • fantastic. Nobuo Uematsu truly created one of his finest line-ups of music when composing the soundtrack.

The graphics of the game were considered good for the time (though I recall wishing that they had just kept with the sprites instead of the strange polygonal shapes that passed for people) but certainly pale in comparison with the graphics of today. However, the pre-rendered backgrounds are quite beautiful, making the moving shapes look ridiculous and simple in comparison, however, licenses have to be made as this was a

period of pushing a new frontier in video-gaming. If it weren’t for the pioneering of games like Final Fantasy VII our graphics wouldn’t be where we are today.

All in all, Final Fantasy VII’s story, gameplay, and music propel it up to be a paragon of the Final Fantasy series. It promises hours upon hours of entertainment, laughter, maybe even a few tears (honestly I’m willing to bet that this game invoked more tears on behalf of gamers than perhaps any other). So go out and play it!
