As a kid, Mr. Mikes was a treat for us because it was one of the very few hamburger restaurants that my parents ever took us too; in their minds, it was a step above fast-food restaurants, while still being relatively inexpensive, but also because the salad bar that came with every meal was nutritious. I remember that the hamburgers were a square-shaped patty, that the buns were thick and tasty, and that the salad bar had all sorts of delicious choices. Then, when I became a teen-ager, the Mr. Mikes chain of restaurants all but disappeared. I didn’t see any at all, anywhere in Western Canada, until just a few years ago, when they started popping up in a few locations. Last

week, I convinced my husband that we should try the Mr. Mike’s Steakhouse and Bar that was in our neighborhood in Calgary, Alberta, to determine whether any of my childhood memories stood the test of time.

This particular location in southwest Calgary is a bit of a strange building, because there is a huge empty spot in the middle of the restaurant that looks like it should be a dance floor. It is surrounded by a small bar, and a long row of booths lining the walls, and then a nice patio area. The patio looks onto a busy road and a parking lot, so it certainly has no view, but we asked to be seated outside anyway, to enjoy the warm evening. The

hostess who seated us looked about 12 years old, but she was hard-working. We ordered beer right away, and then looked at the menu. Alas, the salad bar of my youth was gone, but I had expected as much-in recent times, salad bars have disappeared at many casual dining restaurants. The menu was easy to read, and fairly straightforward-there is a real emphasis on steaks at Mr. Mikes now, but there is still a Mikeburger section. So, there are 4 Mikeburgers, all served with fries and the famous garlic-bread bun, and ranging from $12.99-$14.99-the classic burger, the bacon burger, the mushroom burger and the cheese burger. For steaks, which ranged from $19-$30, there were New York, sirloin, and tenderloin. There are also salads,

a few pasta choices and some chicken items as well. The prices for the steaks are fairly high, as some of the better cuts and/or bigger sizes are nearing $30, but the portions, judging by the tables around us, are much bigger than a Keg restaurant steak meal. The drink menu was quite small, and the wine list not very extensive, but there are certainly enough choices to enjoy a good meal.

We both decided on Mikeburgers, as I needed to see how good they are now, so many years later. I had the mushroom plate and my husband had the bacon one, each for $12.99. The beers arrived promptly, and the food soon after. Yes, the garlic bread bun adds so much flavour,

the meat patty, still square, had a bbq grill taste without any bbq sauce, which was an excellent flavour. My husband commented on that flavour before I had a chance to chew my first bite. The special sauce was subtle-it added flavour and texture, without overpowering the bbq taste. I was impressed, and my husband is now a devoted Mikeburger fan. The fries were okay, not greasy, and the service was excellent; in fact, the manager on duty made the rounds, visiting every table and asking how our meal was and if there was any room for improvement. I was also impressed with that. Overall, we enjoyed our evening dining at Mr. Mikes, and I will be going back whenever I am craving a good burger.
