With the Pocono Race in June 2009, NASCAR instituted a new rule. It’s the double file restart, and until now, it was only done in lesser series for the annual All-Star race. Lately, though, NASCAR has felt the heat to try and liven things up. TV ratings are down, and fans are complaining that the races are boring. With the Car of Today (nee, the Car of Tomorrow), safety has been the focus. Indeed, we’re all happy

that the drivers are safer than ever. However, for some the lack of crashes and such is a downer. There just aren’t the crashes now that there were in the old days. All it takes is one very dramatic incident, like when Carl Edwards’ number 99 car when into the fence at Talladega to stir the pot.

So, today was the first day that the double file restarts began. This means that no longer will lap-down cars star on ...

      • the inside, while lead lap cars are on the outside. Gone are the fights between the leader and the lap-down lead car. What we have now are lead cars racing lead cars, and lap down cars racing other lap down cars. It’s how it should be.

There will be some transition that needs to happen, but all in all, this is a smart move by NASCAR. The drivers aren’t that thrilled about it personally, but all are supporting it

because they know they need to keep the fans, and the fans want some action.

After today’s race, Jeff Gordon was the first to say that he had some work to do in terms of learning how to drive through the mess of lap down cars. Of course, the easy way to do that is not be back there with them in the first place.

In my opinion, the double file restarts are a good thing. NASCAR made a good choice to act now.
