  • Of course, the closing credits span much longer than the song itself, but I love the song, so always look forward to hearing it when the movie ends

The Longest Day has always been an amazing recounting of D-Day, the sixth of June. It’s probably my favorite of all of the World War II movies that I’ve seen, and I’ve seen a ton over the decades. The stellar cast of The Longest Day goes a long way, and with them came so many memorable moments.

*There’s a poignant moment when John Wayne and his men enter

a town and see the dead bodies of the men who had parachuted into the town. They’re hanging, and it’s just a stunning moment of the reality of war.

*Red Buttons has a touching line towards the end of the movie. He’s spent hours as a parachutist hanging from a building. A bell has been ringing in his ears all day, so he can’t really hear very well. He’s also survived almost being shot by the enemy. There’s some humor, but at the end of the day, he evaluates the day and comments about how Wayne’s character has changed. Then he pauses and realizes he’s changed. They’ve all changed. It’s very dramatic.

*Richard Burton has one of the best and most memorable scenes. It’s actually towards the end. It’s a ...

combination of humor and seriousness. First, he realizes that a dead German has his shoes on the wrong feet. Then, after the nightmare of this very long day, he wonders, quite simply, who won.

*Paul Anka singing the theme song at the end of the movie. Of course, the closing credits span much longer than the song itself, but I love the song, so always look forward to hearing

      it when the movie ends.

The Longest Day is a classic. There are many more scenes that come to mind, but the point is that it’s a reminder of an important day in history and how the bravery of many men helped to save the democracy that so much of the world still cherishes to this day. It’s a great movie, with lots of great performances. It comes highly recommended.
