  • It's actually a very interesting, if not predictable, story
  • As I think of what a generation gap means, this story isn't it, so in my opinion, the name of the movie is all wrong

From 2008, Generation Gap stars Edward Asner as Bart Cahill. His grandson, Dylan Statlan (Alex Black) is sent to live with him after he gets into some trouble. Though Dylan’s mother, Veronica (Catherine Mary Stewart) had a rough upbringing and actually ran away and eloped with Dylan’s father, she turns to her father out of desperation. She hopes that Dylan

spending the summer with Bart will get him back on track.

It’s actually a very interesting, if not predictable, story. we all know that a made-for-TV movie as this is will end up quite happily, which it does, which isn’t to say that there isn’t some angst and sadness in it as well.

One of the more intriguing parts of the story is ...

      • how Bart gets Dylan to start reading books. He does it slowly, each book explaining something about life.

A big part of the story is how Dylan gets wrapped up in Bart’s friends, all of whom get together every day at the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars). Ralph Waite and Hal Williams are standouts there. Ultimately, Dylan learns more about his grandfather’s

heroic past from the friends than he does from Bart himself.

The generation gap really isn’t that strong here. To me, this story is more of an awakening and a coming together. As I think of what a generation gap means, this story isn’t it, so in my opinion, the name of the movie is all wrong. Still, it’s a good one.
