Twhirl is a social software desktop client allowing you to send in tweets without the necessity of logging onto the Twitter website. It runs on both Windows and Mac. You can send your updates not only to Twitter but to laconi.ca, Friendfeed and Seesmic as well. It allows you to shorten your URLs without the need to even open your browser, posts pictures via TwitPic and cross-post to many popular sites like Facebook and LinkedIn.

It\’s based on Adobe AIR platform, so you need to download

and install that as well, before you start using your twhirl. But that seems to be the only actual flaw when it comes to installation. Other than this, the entire process is quick and painless and what’s more iportant, you don’t even have to reboot your computer.

The interface is simple and easy to understand even without a ReadMe file or a manual. The color scheme is also easy on the eyes and quite pleasant to look at. True, the minus is that the window is ...

      • a bit small, atleast for my standards, but thankfully, the size can be adjusted. I especially love the notification system, which consists of a soft sound (not too intrusive, but at the same time catching attention) and a soft, slightly transparent pop up in the lower right corner of the screen.

Another feature is the different coloring that distinguishes regular tweets from replies to you and from direct messages.

However, what I do have problems with is the fact that I use twhirl on two different computers.

See, Twhirl has the feature to mark tweets as unread as it receives them. However, because it’s a feature Twitter doesn’t have, when Twhirl downloads tweets during another session, it can mark them as new and unread again. Which might complicate the matters if you don’t remember which tweets you’re already read.

Out of all Twitter desktop clients I’ve tried, Twhirl is one I ended up using. I think it’s the best option out there and I don’t intend to switch clients anytime soon. Or ever. Highly recommend this.
