Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core has been announced ever since Sony PlayStation Portable(PSP) was launched. This PSP exclusive game is actually one of the highlights for the PSP aside from games like GT Portable and God of Wars. For Final Fantasy fans like myself, it has been quite a long wait but thankfully, the game was released in March 2008 and I personally feel that the wait was worthwhile.

Final Fantasy Crisis Core is quite a big change from its predecessor Final Fantasy VII, especially in terms of game play. The story of the game is based on the famous character Zack Fair, who is actually FF7’s hero Cloud’s mentor and good friend. If you’ve watched the CG movie Final Fantasy VII Advent Children or played the old FF7 game, you would have know that Zack died in a battle.

But what caused the death of this legendary SOLDIER? And how did this rowdy newbie make it to the top of the SOLDIER hierarchy? This is where the game tries to do, to fill up the missing clues and make the fans understand the story of Zack Fair.

In the game, you will come across several important characters such as the famous Cloud, Tifa, Aerith and Sephiroth. There are also few other new characters which are pretty important in the life of Zack Fair. For me, the story is very well written and well done. There are several CG cutscenes and all of them are top notch - same quality with Final Fantasy VII Advent Children.

As for the game play, it is no longer turn-based like the predecessor. It plays more like an action game now, with some elements ...

      • of role-playing at the background. The battle system is actually very complicated especially with the introduction of the system called DMW. DMW is something like a slot machine and it is needed to help you level up, or to cast summoning spell. Want to summon the legendary Leviathan or Shiva? You need to try your luck on the slot machine first! Or want to execute that cool-looking limit breaks? On to the slot machine again. But if you want to cast simple spells or do simple attacks, you can do that without the DMW.

This change is very drastic for FF7 fan, and I have a mixed feeling about it. It’s refreshing, but taking the cool factor away from the player’s control is not really a nice thing to do.

Besides that, you can also try to level up

your characters and get precious materias in the custom game part. If you want to get the most powerful materia in the whole game, you will need to go through this game mode and defeat the strongest creature in the game - something named ultima. It’s not in the main story mode. However, if you become too strong, the enemies in the main story mode will just be too easy for you.

Overall, this game is a definite must get for all PSP owners and Final Fantasy fans. I really enjoy the game especially the superb cutscenes. The story is also very nice though a little bit sad towards the ending. I already know the ending, yet, the feeling is different because I’ve played the entire game as Zack Fair and looked at things from his perspective. Highly recommended.
