Early in Charlton Heston’s career, he starred in The Private War of Major Benson. Benson had some attitude problems and to get him in line, he was assigned to take over the running of a boys’ school. It was the low of the low for the major. He

Heston gets to show off some of his humorous side. It’s something that doesn’t happen a lot in his movies, but he really did a good job here. Lambert, the school’s doctor. She, too, gets under Benson’s skin. It’s no big surprise that they fall in love. She challenges him to open his eyes. It’s not easy, but he does it.

The kids are great and many of them were the big child stars of their

era. Tim Considine, Tim Hovey, and Sal Mineo are three of the youthful actors who excel in The Private War of Major Benson. David Janssen has a small role, too, and William Demerest is a hoot. This is a good, fun movie, and something different of Heston to enjoy.
