A holiday the British weather can’t spoil. I also guarantee you will feel, and perhaps even act, like a kid again.

The best bit is the swimming dome. This is basically a large greenhouse, with cafes and other food outlets, sun-beds, crab pots, cold pools, and some other grown-up stuff. But more importantly, there is a large swimming pool and wave machine, various water slides, flumes, and the rapids.

The rapids are fantastic fun. It’s like a flume, but bigger, and open. Like a series of slides, connected to outside pools. It’s swimming a shallow river rapid. I usually spend hours going round and round until I’m exhausted, in need of food, or get thrown out because the pool is closing. I like

it. Did you get that impression yet?

Use of all the swimming facilities is free. If you can drag yourself away and fancy doing something different, you will be spoilt for choice there are tons of activities on offer. You can book courts for sports like badminton, tennis or squash, do roller-skating, ten-pin bowling, snooker and pool, climbing, archery, fencing, adventure quad biking, go horse riding, hire cycles, or get on the lake with a pedalo, canoe. And on and on.

If you want something a little less strenuous, there is a fantastic health and beauty spa with various treatments, plus great saunas, steam rooms, and relaxation pools. The Spa package is great value and unbelievably relaxing, I loved the scents ...

      • in the Japanese Salt and Turkish steam rooms and pampering myself afterwards with the complimentary Elemis shower, body and facial lotions. I even had a zen moment in the Japanese garden, wondering around in my bathrobe barefoot. Bliss.

All the locations are beautiful and Elveden in particular is quiet, isolated and perfect for a long walk amongst the mixed evergreen and deciduous forest. There is lots of wildlife to see, we spotted deer, ducks and pheasants and at the Cumbria site they have red squirrels (the grey invaders have been evicted for a re-introduction program). You can actually see a lot of wildlife just from your villa. On to the accommodation. It’s very comfortable, with large bedrooms and open lounge and kitchen area

well equipped for self-catering, I certainly found everything I needed to cook meals. You can even hire Executive villas with corner whirlpool baths, heated flooring, DVD player, balcony and other luxuries.

If you can’t cook, won’t cook, there are plenty of restaurants on site from basic America style diners, to Italian, French and Spanish restaurants, cafes, pancake house, Chinese and Indian restaurants and pubs. I thought the Indian restaurant was particularly good; the sweet pancakes were delicious (but not the savoury ones - they were not very satisfying, and more importantly it’s wrong - like having savoury ice-cream or chocolate)

Just writing this reivew is giving me withdrawl symptoms - I haven’t been for a while and am well over-due weekend break at Center Parcs.
