What Gidget is to the beach, Tammy is to rural America. Tammy and the Bachelor was the beginning of the Tammy franchise. Naturally, it’s the best of all of them, with Debbie Reynolds appearing as the charmingly honest and unsophisticated Tammy Tyree. Tammy and her grandfather live in the swamps of Mississippi. They’re happy as clams. Then there’s an accident

that results in handsome bachelor Peter Brent being nursed back to health by Tammy, who’s smitten from the get-go. Leslie Nielsen plays the merry bachelor.

Eventually, Peter recovers and leaves to return to his home. One day, Tammy follows, and that’s where the real fun begins. We get to hear Reynolds sing the theme song during this segment. I love that song.

      • It’s simple and so melodic. It fits the character very well.

One of the nicest segments is a party held at the Brent home when Tammy takes on a role of their ancestors and tells how she came to be where she was. It’s really awesome listening to it.

By the end of Tammy and the Bachelor, happiness reigns. She gets her man,

or so we believe. When held as a single movie, the resolution is perfect. Reynolds makes the movie herself. Nielsen doesn’t thrill me, but Mildred Natwork does as Aunt Renie. She has pizzazz. Walter Brennan as her grandfather is equally wonderful to watch.

Tammy and the Bachelor is a winner, a great start for the franchise and the best of all.
