  • Butler's Moondoggie is more in keeping with Peterson's version, too, so there is definitely some kind of connection here between these two renditions
  • I like Stroud, but I think I prefer Robertson's characterization

Over a decade since we’d last seen Gidget Lawrence, she returns in Gidget’s Summer Reunion, a 1985 made-for-TV movie. The latest Gidget is Caryn Richmond, and she made a great Gidget. She takes on more of the Karen Valentine style of Gidget, a woman who has grown up and morphed her surfing world into the real world of being a wife. She’s good. I really liked her performance in this movie.

      Playing Moondoggie for this

production was Little House on the Prairie’s Dean Butler. Interestingly, his name has reverted back to Griffin, the name used in the Gidget Grows Up movie that starred Valentine and Paul Peterson as Moondoggie. Butler’s Moondoggie is more in keeping with Peterson’s version, too, so there is definitely some kind of connection here between these two renditions.

The Griffins have left their beach life behind for the most part, but this summer, Gidget decides it’s time for ...

      • a reunion. It’s not without its angst, though, but in the end, the guys show up and everyone has a blast. Don Stroud plays Kahuna. The only other time this character was seen was in the first Gidget with Sandra Dee. Cliff Robertson played the part then. I like Stroud, but I think I prefer Robertson’s characterization.

Gidget’s best friend here is still Larue, taken from the TV series with Sally Field. At

that time, it was Lynette Winter playing the role. Here, it’s Anne Lockhart, and that’s actually a very good choice. Lockhart has similarities to Winter, so it works.

Russell Lawrence gets a new actor for Gidget’s Summer Reunion with William Schallert taking over. Apparently, everyone agreed with killing of the mom in the TV series, because we’ve never seen Dorothy Lawrence again.

Gidget’s Summer Reunion was a success, so much so that it became a TV series.
