After three successful movies on the big screen, Hollywood brought the girl midget (hence, gidget) surfer to the small screen. It was the big break for Sally Field, who took on the Gidget role. It brought her recognition. It still bugs me that she sneers at this and her The Flying Nun

series. As I often say, without Gidget and the nun, she’d never been Norma Rae. I’m really highly insulted by some of the things she’s said about her time in classic TV.

Regardless, Field made a great Gidget. Moondoggie was off at college for the purposes of this TV series, though he shows ...

Don Porter, who played Russell Lawrence in the third movie, gets the nod here, too. There is no mom, though. All of a sudden, Lawrence is a widower.

        One of the

best parts of Gidget is watching Pete Duel, who went on to star in Alias Smith and Jones. In this show, he plays Gidget’s brother-in-law. He’s just fun to watch. Lynette Winter as Larue, Gidget’s best friend, is a hoot, too.

The TV series was enjoyable. It didn’t last long, but it was fun.
