Gidget is one of my all-time favorite movies. It’s a beach movie, a light comedy about growing up and falling in love. It’s simple, and that’s why it works. The acting is good, and it’s just an upbeat, let’s have a good time watching it movie.

Sandra Dee stars as Frances Lawrence, who quickly gets dubbed Gidget by the surfers because she’s pint-size, like a midget

who’s a girl; hence, a gidget. A bit of a tomboy, Gidget just wants to be accepted. Soon, she just wants to be noticed by the surfer who has captured her heart.

The surfer is Jeffrey Matthews, only she only knows him by his moniker of Moondoggie. Yes, it sounds silly, but teenagers drooled with delight. The tall, dark, and handsome James Darren was the perfect ...

      • Moondoggie. I loved him as a child, that’s for sure. Moondoggie could take me to the beach any time.

Naturally, love doesn’t go easily, but it does go eventually, especially after a bit of covert nudging by Cliff Robertson, who plays The Big Kahuna. He’s perhaps the most changed by this long summer with Gidget. No one was more surprised than he was.

        Gidget’s dad, Russell

Lawrence, is played here by Arthur O’Connell, with Mary LaRoche playing her mom, Dorothy. He was frazzled, and she did her best to just understand her daughter and try to be there for her.

Gidget is wonderful. I adore it with a passion, and I watch it often. Dee and Darren make me smile. They went well together and they made Gidget a great big hit.
