The Shadow Within is Book 2 of Karen Hancock's ?The Legends of Guardian-King Christian fantasy series. I believe I have already reviewed Book 1, "The Light of Eidon," which I had immediately fallen in love with.

The sequel continues the tale of Abramm, a prince turned monk turned slave turned gladiator.

After spending several long, difficult years in faraway lands, Abramm returns to his homeland, Kiriath.

His younger brother Gillard is now king.

Gillard had always been physically stronger, and always hated and tormented Abramm.

It was him who sold him into slavery.

Now Abramm is a great warrior, he could have easily taken revenge on Gillard ? but his newfound faith stops him.

He claims the crown of Kiriath.

Unexpectedly, a large part of the nobility supports him, and Gillard is forced to go back to the status of a prince.

Needless to say, he is not happy about it; first, he secretly plots against Abramm, then starts a war.

This second book is a worthy addition to the first.

Good story, fascinating characters, solid spiritual message.

Christian truths are recognizable, although set in a different world.
