Meryl Streep shines brightly in 1999’s Music of the Heart. This is masterful film that is a joy to watch. It’s a film of the heart and of the soul, and it’s a wonderful ride. Best of all, it’s based on a true story.

Streep is Roberta Guaspari, a wife and mother

who is shocked to learn that her husband has run off with her best friend. She needs a job, but she’s not trained to do anything, except she knows music. Though brushed aside at first, Roberta manages to get a job teaching at a school. It’s the start of her growth ...

      • and transformation.

Gloria Estefan has a great part as a fellow teacher and friend of Roberta’s, and Angela Bassett is awesome as the principal of the school. Aidan Quinn is colorful as Roberta’s new boyfriend, and Cloris Leachman is wonderful as her mother. It’s a fine cast. Added to that are the

young people who play her students. All come across beautifully.

The concert at the end is so neat to watch. It’s thrilling to see how it comes about and how they play together, the students and the professionals.

Music of the Heart is about heart and triumph. I love this movie and urge everyone to see it.
