Lake Mead, 601 National Highway, Boulder City, NV
  • Should you come to Las Vegas in the near future and want to see some places outside of the typical casino fare, one of the best places for you to go is to Lake Mead
  • If you come during the summer months, I recommend that you use caution, as the temperatures at Lake Mead can often swell to 116 and above
  • Make sure to bring plenty of suncreen and water and, especially if you are bringing kids, limit the amount of time you stay out in the heat, to avoid dangerous health situations
  • I like to go during the mid-fall, when the temps out at the lake, while still hot, are lots more bearable
  • I enjoy Lake Mead because it is very scenic and it is such a nice reprieve from looking at nothing but desert all the time

Should you come to Las Vegas in the near future and want to see some places outside of the typical casino fare, one of the best places for you to go is to Lake Mead. Lake Mead, located on the Colorado River, is famous for being the biggest man-made lake and reservoir in the country, so it is really something spectacular to see. My husband and I are currently residents of Las Vegas and lots of people out here enjoy the opportunity to see someplace with water as opposed to all the desert scenery, so a lot of boating enthusiasts and families head for Lake Mead when they have the chance, since it is just 30 miles southeast of Vegas.

I like to go during the mid-fall, when the temps out at the lake, while still hot, are lots more bearable. If you want to see it during the warmest months, however, I suggest booking one of the many cruises some area cruise lines have available.

Call the hotel where you plan on staying way in advance and ask them to help you book a Lake Mead cruise. That way, you can view the beauty of the lake in comfort, plus enjoy a wonderful meal while doing it.

For me, vacations are all about comfort, so if I were ...

      • an out-of-town visitor who wanted to see Lake Mead, the cruise is how I would do it. If you decide to skip the cruise option and drive out to the lake yourself, though, there are a lot of things you can do for recreation.

Several of the locals like to water ski, water jet and swim, although lots of caution should be exercised if you choose to swim, as there have been a few incidents of people drowning. Also the winds can get high on some days and, if you are boating, this could be hazardous if you are not an experienced boater.

I personally think larger boats fare better than small ones in the lake, since they are better able to withstand the high winds. There are even areas with little coves that take on the sandy

        look of a real beach.

You can fish there, if you have the proper license, although the time my husband and I went, the fish were not biting particularly well. Some folks swear that they have caught some large bass there, so it probably was just that it wasn’t a good fishing day when we went.

I enjoy Lake Mead because it is very scenic and it is such a nice reprieve from looking at nothing but desert all the time. Yep, there is an entrance fee you have to pay, which is $5 per vehicle, $3 per individual, $20 for annual passes, $10 for Golden Age Passports for seniors, $50 for National Parks Pass, $10 per first vessel,if you plan to bring your boat, and another $5 for each additional vessel.

Really a reasonable price for all you get to do and see.
