From 1991, The Prince of Tides stars Barbra Streisand and Nick Nolte. Sometimes I find it hard to believe those two made an on-screen couple, but they definitely did. Also in the film, which Streisand directed, are Blythe Danner, Melinda Dillon, Kate Nelligan, George Carlin, and, making his film debut, Jason Gould. Gould, the son of Streisand and Elliot Gould,

      plays Streisand’s son here.

The Prince of Tides is rather intense. It’s not a pretty story by any means. It gets into some very intense subject matter. Streisand plays Susan Lowenstein, a psychiatrist, who is trying to help her patient and subsequently, her patient’s family. In the process, she ends up having an affair with Nolte, who is married to ...

      • Danner. Though that’s a big part of the story, it’s not one I’m fond of really. I just have a hard time believing in a Streisand-Nolte coupling.

Danner is brilliant as the wife. Does she know or doesn’t she? She’s just great. Gould is actually very good as the violin-playing protege who also likes football. Dillon, who often

plays somewhat wacky characters, brings her usual strange vibe and uncertain aura to her role.

I like The Prince of Tides, and it’s an excellent movie. As I said, though, it’s not always an easy watch because of the subject matter concerning the mystery of the Wingo family. It’s horrific, in fact. Still, this is a film to be witnessed at least once.
