Last Monday at the Philippine Life Insurance Congress, I was fortunate enough to have listened to the talk of Senator Manny Villar as he is one of our Guest Speaker.

You’d think that a person of his stature - Senator and one of the richest people in the Philippines, you’d hear a bragging individual that will only boast of his success and tactfully promote his candidacy. But no, he just shared to us his story.

Sen. Villar is somebody that embodied the true Filipino and gives a testament

to the term, “Sipag at Tiyaga” (Hardwork and Diligence). After all, he came from a brood of nine and lived in the slums of Tondo Manila.

When he graduated from college, his first business was a complete failure. He kidded that he immediately went bankrupt because the person he loaned to did not pay him back. Undeterred, he again went into other businesses and later on, low-cost real estate because he thought that Filipinos cannot afford their own houses because all houses are expensive.

      Despite criticisms, Sen. Villar ...

      • went on and built his real estate firm - Camella and Palmera Homes, the largest developer in the country. He will eventually moved on and developed other companies that cater to the middle class and upper classes.

He ran for politics and was the youngest House Speaker and eventually became Senate President. No one had achieved that since the late president Jose P. Laurel.

What he kept on emphasizing is the need to bounce back after falling. However, getting back up is just not enough but we should

aim another step higher when we rise up. That is how we will grow and be stronger.

I am inspired by his story and wish that more politicians will have his wisdom. He already had platform ready in case he wins the office - Entrepreneur Revolution. He reasoned that the only way for the Philippines to move forward is for people to embrace being entrepreneurs. I agree with him on that.

Senator Villar is currently facing investigation but I’ll definitely vote for him for the next president of the Philippines.

    PilipinoPoAko says :

HOW, REALLY, DID MANUEL BAMBA VILLAR JR. GET TO BE RICH? It bears to investigate and it can serve the Filipino nation well to know that Manny Villar may actually have broken through from Tondo-ragged accountant to billionaire-rich presidentiable by allowing himself to be used as a foreign investor s dummy in the Philippine real estate business. You see, the conduct of real estate business in the Philippines is made exclusive by law to Filipino citizens, necessarily because its affairs involve sensitive issues affecting civil rights, territory, sovereignty, patrimony, and national security. Wasn t that a debonair American who was smilingly visible every day at the offices of Crown Asia Inc. way back before the Villars became political aspirants? Unfortunately, sighting American presence at the Crown Asia Inc. organization deteriorates to zero visibility in hot election weather, especially nowadays As Manny Villar embarked on a political career, it strategically became imperative to avoid flaks of damaging controversy about being financially beholden to foreign influence, especially from nationalist camps of the likes of then Senator Teofisto Guingona Jr. who was one among legislators instrumental in passing general law limiting real estate business in the Philippines to Filipinos only. In fact, it was from 1997 to 1999 that the bespectacled, middle-aged, happy American investor silent? fronted? non-express? implied? of Crown Asia Inc. was last regularly observed at the 18th Floor of Cityland Herrera Tower. Apart from being born with a silver spoon, most of us often have humble , sometimes rotten , beginnings yet being transparent about such beginnings can do even more good than harm. The answer may go as far back as Villar s auditing days at internationally-patronized Sycip Gorres Velayo SGV or, perhaps, good Senator Manuel Villar would like to comment on the matter at this time?
