  • When I first saw the Mandolin I thought it was going to be a great way to save time and energy, as well as make things a little safer for the kids when they want to help out in the kitchen-- nothing could have been further from the truth though
  • The blades are not the best, not at all super sharp so you sometimes have the flesh left intact and the whole piece of whatever it was you were slicing dragged through the cutter
  • I like that the different graters are color coded so this set is easy for children to use because you can direct them to the correct size based on the colored system rather than trying to explain sizes to them

Cool kitchen gadgets are always fun to play with, but if they don’t work as well as they could then they are no fun at all and just end up taking much needed counter space. I totally felt like the Multi-Blade Mandolin from Avon was a waste of space and a huge waste of money because it hardly worked the first time and then didn’t work well enough after that to be used in my kitchen again without being more trouble than it was worth. When I first saw the Mandolin I thought it was going to be a great way to save time and energy, as well as make things a little safer for the kids when they want to help out in the kitchen– nothing could have been further from the truth

      though.

To begin, the multi blade device hardly works even with the easiest fruits and vegetables that you would want to slice or dice. It takes longer to get the job done than it would if you were just to cut them all yourself. The blades are not the best, not at all super sharp so you sometimes have the flesh left intact and the whole piece of whatever it was you were slicing dragged through the cutter. You then would have to remove the now messy mushed up piece and try to get it to slice again. Things like this take up time and take the job even longer to do, sometimes making it trickier and leaving you trying to devise a way to get the vegetables in and out so that ...

      • you can use them in your cooking.

The only thing that works up to par are the individual graters which are pretty standard and are hard to mess up in any capacity. I like that the different graters are color coded so this set is easy for children to use because you can direct them to the correct size based on the colored system rather than trying to explain sizes to them. I also liked that they stored within the whole contraption so that they are kept out of the way when you are working. That is the only good thing about the size or shape of the grater itself because otherwise it is so large and awkward that it is really hard to find a space for or to store it.

The whole blade system is very long and awkward making it hard for one person to use it on their own without some help. The worst part of this is that the whole thing tends to slide across the countertop because there is no non skid part to the base at all. I had to worry about losing food or losing a finger when the base decided to move on me while I was using it. It does not store well and it has no place on the counter because of the long shape. When it comes to cleaning, that is a whole other debacle and I would rather use a knife and do it all by hand than have to take this thing apart to clean and then put back together again.
