Based on Jean Craighead George classic childrens book about wilderness survival, My Side of the Mountain follows the adventures of a boy named Sam (Ted Eccles). Sam lives in the city, changed to Toronto for the film, and yearns to live alongside nature as his hero Thoreau. One day he leaves his family for the wilds, changed to

Quebec, to live out his dream. Bringing along his pet raccoon, Gus, Sam discovers what it means to live from the land. Eventually, Sam takes and trains a falcon to help with his hunting and befriends a folk singer named Bando who stumbles onto his camp.

While this is fairly faithful to the book, it goes off in several ...

      • directions that are not very sucessful. I didn’t like the changed fate for Frightful the Falcon, a little too Disney in its cruelty, and I didn’t like the films ending. It is much more comical and satisfying in the book, where Sam’s leaving home is as much for his large families survival as his own. I don’t know
if kids will enjoy it for these changes. Maybe they were done so that none of them would get the idea to head off on their own. That’s admirable but it spoils the story over all.

That said, My Side of the Mountain is an okay little movie with good performances, from humans and animals alike, and with stunning scenery.
