Between 1998 and 2000 the Upright Citizens Brigade were one of the funniest sketch shows on TV. In fact the only sketch show that comes to mind that could match (and often times beat) the UCB for creativity or humor was HBO’s Mr. Show with Bob and David. Unfortunately for us fans of the Upright Citizens Brigade the show was cancelled after its 3rd season in 2000.

Fortunately, however, the UCB has returned to DVD (at least the first season). One would hope that later seasons will one day be released on DVD as well but we will have to see about that. The UCB stars Ian Roberts, Matt

Besser, Amy Pohler and Matt Walsh, most of whom have gone on to other projects since the untimely demise of UCB.

(Amy Poehler went on to be a writer for Saturday Night Live, while Matt Walsh can currently be seen on Comedy Central’s Dog Bites Man). The comedy comes fast and furious on the Upright Citizens Brigade. It can be a little edgy at times and sometimes the comedy just doesn’t quite make it.

When they are on it, though, the UCB was one of the funniest things around. The First Season DVD contains all 10 episodes from the first season on two disks. Some of the real ...

      • standouts from the show’s run appear in the first season (episodes such as the Bucket of Truth, Saigon Suicide Squad or Cyborgs, for example).

It is best to watch the shows in order. While this isn’t a requirement, many of the jokes build upon each other and some references make more sense if you have seen all the episodes prior to it. For special features the Upright Citizens Brigade first season DVD contains commentaries on four episodes, as well as a special in character commentary for The Little Donny Foundation.

It also contains the never before seen pilot with live commentary and live commentary for the episode the Time Machine

with an audience Q&A afterwards. There are also a couple of deleted scenes and live scenes from the pre-television appearances of the Upright Citizens Brigade. Being able to see the original pilot is a real treat.

Many of the scenes were later redone and updated in other episodes, and it is interesting to see the show’s evolution. My one complaint about the commentaries is that they were not done for all of the episodes. There are only ten of them to begin with, asking for commentaries for each one isn’t that much to ask.

Ah, well. For fans of hilarious, edgy sketch comedy, the Upright Citizens Brigade Complete First Season DVD is a must.
