  • As long as you can be patient with the long lineup, Peter's most definitely earns its reputation for being the best place for hamburgers, fries and shakes in Alberta

It was my first day at my new job in my new city of residence, Calgary, Alberta. Just before lunchtime, our secretary walked around the office, taking down peoples’ orders for lunch, and I was curious, so I asked what everyone was ordering and from where? She told me “Peter’s, and we do this for lunch every week.” I asked my co-worker what Peter’s was, and he said told me not to worry, just to tell him what kind of milkshake I liked and he would do the ordering for me. I insisted, and he said that Peter’s Drive-In was a legend in Calgary

and I would love it. So I ordered a raspberry milkshake.

As soon as the food arrived, the entire office filled with the aroma of French fries. It was the very best cheeseburger I have ever had-it was so huge, that I ended up taking half my lunch home with me that night-and the milkshake was also great-it was obviously made with real raspberries. So I became a fan of Peter’s Drive In, and my husband and I would frequently end up there during our four years in Calgary.

Given that fact that Peter’s is an institution in the city, I was interested in actually seeing ...

      • it first hand. The restaurant is actually an old fashioned drive in, which has been operating since 1964, and owned by the original owner and founder. There are two ways to order-in the drive-through lane, which backs up traffic for miles every day at noon, or by ordering at the walk-up window. The only seats are a few picnic tables outside. The menu is mouthwatering and unbelievably inexpensive. The choices of milkshakes are endless, and you can order combinations of flavours too, all for $4.00. The milkshake alone will leave you feeling very full. The hamburgers are singles, doubles or triples, with cheese or
without, for $3-$4.50. The fries and onion rings are home-made, large cut, and not too greasy-all are excellent. Peter’s also sells hotdogs, sundaes, and other ice-cream treats-and that is all; they concentrate on doing those things well. The hamburgers have a BBQ sauce-like topping that makes them unique.

As long as you can be patient with the long lineup, Peter’s most definitely earns its reputation for being the best place for hamburgers, fries and shakes in Alberta. No trip to the city is complete without a visit to Peter’s, but make sure you are VERY hungry, or you will be having your meal for dinner as well.
